Final Thoughts: Enhancing Your Teaching

As you near the end of the semester, we encourage you to think about your future work as a teacher. We’d like to draw your attention to some additional resources and support available to you that will help you develop your skills further.

We highly recommend the UM Graduate Teacher Certificate offered by CRLT. WRITING 993 fulfills one of the program requirements, getting you one step closer to an additional qualification that will enhance your CV.

Additionally, now is perfect time for you to begin building a Teaching Portfolio. This collection of documents is an invaluable asset for your career. Your portfolio could include:

  • Teaching philosophy statement
  • Description of teaching experience, training, and any teaching awards
  • Sample syllabi, lesson plans, and/or assignments
  • Student and/or department evaluations
  • Samples of student work (consider saving some with your feedback and grades)

We encourage you to explore CRLT’s page on Teaching Portfolios and Course Portfolios, which include resources on how to create teaching and course portfolios, teaching philosophy statements, and electronic portfolios.

In addition to Graduate Writer Support, the Sweetland Center for Writing also offers the Fellows Seminar, a year long program for graduate students and faculty to discuss critical issues related to the teaching of writing across the disciplines. During the seminar graduate students also develop new syllabi and teach a first-year seminar.

We hope you enjoy your experience teaching a ULWR course at UM. The Sweetland Center for Writing is pleased to support you and your students as teachers and writers.
